SIEM REAP – MOUNTAIN BIKE ADVENTURE IN ANGKOR
IN CONSTRUCTION
HIGHLIGHTS
Visit the main sites of Angkor by mountain bike: (Preah Khan, Ta Prohm, Ta Nei, Angkor Thom, Bayon, Baphuon, Phimeanakas, Terrace of Elephants
Cycling tour through the majestic temples of Angkor!
Departing from your hotel in a typical Cambodian tuk-tuk, you’ll reach the archaeological site of Angkor early in the morning. Enigmatic in many ways, Preah Khan temple was built by King Jayavarman VII to honor his late father. It has been left largely unrestored, you’ll get to stroll through a maze of doors with numerous trees and other vegetation growing among the ruins and the precious sculptures spared by time. The temple is truly an archaeological treasure, a testament to the glorious past and the untamed nature.
Riding your bike, you’ll progress on a laterite track to reach the small temple of Ta Nei, lost in the jungle. This less-traveled path will lead you through a 7km ride of little archaeological treasures and beautiful landscapes, from the small bridge build during the colonial era to the Ta Prohm temple. Here, columns, vines, and roots of century-old “cheese trees” intertwine. Translated from Khmer as “The ancestor Brahma”, Ta Prohm is a magical place to enjoy the beauty and authenticity of nature and take in the preserved memory of the explorers who revealed Angkor to the West world.
After having lunch at a local restaurant, it’s time to get back on the bikes (or in the backup tuk-tuk for those who want to) for an afternoon of new exploration.
You will get to discover the great royal city of Angkor Thom and the history behind its particular architecture. King Jayavarman VII built a laterite rampart forming a square of 3 kilometers on each side with an outer moat of one hundred meters wide to protect his city from invaders.
It will also be the occasion to get off your bikes and walk to the Terrace of the Elephants to enjoy the view from this splendid place where the king and his court used to attend the games and processions.
On the west side of the temples, located in the middle of the royal old palace, stands the Phimeanakas. This celestial temple symbolizes a sky palace and used to be a place to worship the gods.
A few steps away you’ll reach the Bayon, the central temple of this fortified city. At first sight, the Bayon may appear as a disorder of blackened stones and a tangle of some fifty towers with faces but it’s truly a very impressive and stunning construction.
Finally, the day comes to an end as you ride to the ramparts to admire the sunset from the South Gate bridge, before going back to your hotel in the late evening. The ride back is on Tuk Tuk to help you recover from a wonderful day of physical exercise and cultural learning.
