What is the Mekong Delta

Considered as the rice bowl of Vietnam, Mekong Delta or Mien Tay is the endearing name Vietnamese people often call the land has always been a popular destination for anyone visiting Ho Chi Minh Chi city and looking for things to do. The Mekong delta is formed by a total of nine rivers with most of the land covered and divided by wetlands and rivers. There’re a lot of things to do in the Mekong Delta from vast paddy files in the south to hills in the north and west. Coconut trees, travel by boat, and visiting local fruit orchards are something you can do for a trip to visit the land of the Mekong Delta.

When is the good time for a tour in Mekong Delta 

The weather in Vietnam can be split by region. 

In the Northern part May to October is hot and humid with lots of rainfall. November to April is dry and cooler. In the far north part of Vietnam like Sapa, Lao Cai it’s particularly cold and you can expect to see snow in December.

In the Southern part November to April is generally dry and hot. May to October is warm and dry with heavy rainfall. It normally has storms and floods in central area cities like Quang Binh, Hue in October.

Dry season is the peak season in the Mekong Delta. And, the best time to visit Mekong Delta is from November to April, when the weather remains mostly pleasant. During this time, the region is amazing with lush sky, many fruit types and calm rivers.

Tour Mekong Delta – What to see and do

Tour Mekong Delta – Ben Tre city

Ben Tre is known as the Homeland of Best Coconuts in Vietnam. It takes 2 hours by bus ( 85 km ) away from Ho Chi Minh city to go to Ben Tre and is connected to the surrounding provinces by the Rach Mieu Bridge. It is contiguous to three provinces: Tra Vinh on the West, Tien Giang on the North East, Vinh Long on the North West.

In addition to coconuts, Ben Tre also has many fruit farms, most of which are concentrated in Cho Lach and Chau Thanh districts. The area of Ben Tre province is not really large and with only a day or two days, you can visit all famous tourist sites in the province.

Tour Mekong Delta – My Tho city

A trip in the Mekong Delta wouldn’t be complete without a boat trip. A boat trip is the best thing to do in My Tho. Located on the Tieng River (money river in local Vietnamese language) My Tho has several branches with smaller rivers, which are then connected to each other by different channels. On the big river you will travel by motorboat where you can see a lot of the local river life such as fishermen and boats that carry enormous amounts of fruit. Small traditional sampan boats will normally be used when you travel in small canals alongside the rivers and local house communities.

There are 4 popular islands in My Tho that you can visit by boat. By visiting local islands, you will have a closer look at the local life of the Mekong delta people. One thing you may see all the time is the smiles of the local people here as the Mekong delta is well known as the place that has the most friendly people in Vietnam. On the islands, you will find many fruit orchards like mangos, jackfruit, pomelos…all types of tropical fruits, you name it. Here you can watch how the fruit is grown and of course, you can eventually pick and try delicious seasonal fruit in the local garden.

Tour Mekong Delta – Cai Be Floating Market

When planning for a tour in the Mekong Delta, you will surely think of the “floating market”, one of the typical cultures of the Mekong Delta. Cai Be floating market is one of the three largest wholesale markets in the Southwest region, along with Cai Rang floating market and Nga Bay floating market. So the market is always crowded and bustling, and boats are busy on the river.

Located 80km away from HCMC through 1A highway, Cai Be floating market still retains the typical cultural activities of the market in the Mekong Delta. Prominent is the transit station of fruits and products to all regions. The common unique feature of floating markets is “that pole, vegetables – fruits”, that is, on boats selling any kind of fruit and agricultural products, they are hung on a pole for buyers to easily identify, and do not have to advertise. It is a very interesting and unique instruction in the transaction method of the people living in the water areas.

Tour Mekong Delta – Can Tho 

Located about 200 km from Ho Chi Minh City,  Can Tho is lying along the banks of the mighty Hau River, a distributary of the larger Mekong River that feeds directly into the South China Sea. 

Known as the capital city of the region, Can Tho produces the largest number of agricultural products.  And this prime waterfront locale has created so much of Can Tho’s economic and cultural success since its birth more than 2,000 years ago.

Tour Mekong Delta – Rach Gia

Rach Gia is a charming harbor town in the province of Kien Giang in the Gulf of Siam, this is the only city in the West located along the coast. Normally visitors come to this city to take the speed boat to Phu Quoc island and only spend a short period of time exploring the city. This bustling coastal city has a beautiful natural landscape with many valuable cultural and historical relics, unique architectural works that harmoniously combine the three ethnic groups of Kinh, Hoa, and Khmer. Because of having many different religions, Rach Gia includes more than 40 places of worship and they clearly reflect the unique characteristics of each religion. There are also regular flights from the airport in Rach Gia to Saigon and Phu Quoc.

Tour Mekong Delta – Phu Quoc Island

Phu Quoc, a tropical paradise located in the Gulf of Thailand, is the largest island of Vietnam located in the southwest, and also the largest island in a population of 22 different large and small islands here. Phu Quoc together with other islands form Phu Quoc island district of Kien Giang province. In 2006, Kien Giang coastal and marine biosphere reserve including Phu Quoc was recognized by UNESCO as a world biosphere reserve.

Phu Quoc has many beautiful beaches stretching from the north to the south, 99 mountains and hills and primeval forests with rich flora and fauna. In the north of the island, there are fishing villages of Rach Vem, Bai Thom, Hon Mot, etc., outstanding with wild beauty, or in the South Island, there are 12 different large and small islands in the An Thoi archipelago, such as Hon Thom, Hon Hon. Nails, Gam Ghi Island, May Rut Island, etc. are ideal places for activities to explore nature and activities at sea such as yachting, fishing, diving to see corals and exploring exotic islands.
