Ayutthhaya , Discovery of the ancient capital
IN CONSTRUCTION
Visit the long-lost kingdom of Ayutthaya, the historic capital of ancient-day Thailand.
Around 8 am, meet your English-speaking guide to take the road to Ayutthaya.
An hour and a half away from Bangkok, Ayutthaya was in the 14th century the former Siamese capital. Sadly, it was destroyed in the 18th century by the Burmese armies, although the site is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its beautiful remaining architectural sites.
On your way, stop at the Royal Summer Palace “Bang Pra Inn’ before proceeding to the main historical site.
Established on an artificial island, you’ll discover many priceless relics of the ancient kingdom of Ayutthaya. Your guide will lead you through the ruins, explaining the stories behind each archaeological treasure. Following this order, you’ll stop at Wat Phra Si Sanphet and Wat Mongkhon Bophit; hosting one of the largest bronze Buddha in the country, and Wat Chai Watthanaram; one of the most photographed sites of Ayutthaya thanks to its imposing 35 m high central “prang” of Khmer style. Also, you’ll get to admire Wat Mahathat; a sandstone head of the Buddha mysteriously entangled in the roots of a tree in a romantic-mystic embrace.
Finally, you’ll visit the great Wat Yaï Chaïmongkol, built-in 1357 by King U Thong, the founder of the city. It houses an impressive collection of Buddhas, lined up at the entry of the temple and carved on the stones.
After this marveling tour, eat and enjoy some free time on-site before driving back to Bangkok in the middle of the afternoon.
